Ministry of Health celebrates World Food Safety Day

The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) celebrated World Food Safety Day on Tuesday, under the theme “Safer Food, Better Health”.
The ministry has organized an awareness campaign highlighting the role safe and nutritious food plays in ensuring human health and well-being and calls for a set of specific actions to make food safer.
Director of Food Safety and Environmental Health Wassan Abdullah al-Baker said the ministry was keen to raise public awareness of food safety, define health risks from eating unsafe food and promote a culture of food safety among all parties involved in the food supply chain.
She emphasized that the campaign is part of MoPH’s drive to apply international best practice in food safety management at all stages of the food supply chain “from farm to consumer”, in a way that serves the national health strategy and its food security objectives.
The ministry also implements international best practices in food safety, including inspection services, laboratory services, risk analysis and establishment of control, supervision and regulatory standards, it said. -she adds.
As part of the campaign, the MoPH disseminates policy messages related to food security, this is done through the media and social communication, and the ministry’s website, in addition to distributing publications on food safety at food establishments, awareness materials and to participate in a workshop. for productive families, in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Development and Family, on ensuring food security.

World Food Safety Day aims to raise awareness of food safety, prevent disease through food safety, and discuss collaborative approaches to improving food safety across different sectors.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), foodborne illnesses affect 1 in 10 people worldwide each year, and more than 200 of these illnesses range from mild to life-threatening.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) established World Food Safety Day in 2018; To raise awareness of this important issue, WHO and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations are co-facilitating the observance of World Food Safety Day, in collaboration with Member States and other stakeholders.(QNA)
