Some of the most notable findings from this year’s report concerned the long-term impact on employers of employees diagnosed with COVID-19. With the ability to assess a second year of COVID-19 data, Springbuk went beyond case count trends and found that six months after hospitalization, employers were paying on average $40,005 in 2021 — an increase of 70% compared to the same period of the previous year. Similarly, non-hospitalized COVID-19 positive employees saw their healthcare costs increase by 25% six months after infection.

These results highlighted the need for employers to educate employees on COVID-19 protocols, especially for high-risk employees (those with comorbidities). It could also provide employees with the opportunity to implement programs to reduce these underlying risks in their respective employee populations.
