Taiwan Ministry of Health develops logo for infant and toddler food products

The logo, which consists of a woman carrying a baby, is also accompanied by the slogans “breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants (母乳是嬰兒最佳的營養來源)” and “The Ministry of Health and Wellness takes care of you (衛生福利部關心您).

Other than that, products should refrain from terms referring to human breast milk, such as “humanized milk (人乳化、母乳化) to show that the products are better than human breast milk.

Images of babies and images or wordings that idealize the products are also not allowed.

The Taiwan Ministry of Health and Welfare recommends the use of the above logo on infant and toddler nutrition products.

Additionally, product labeling must not include false, exaggerated, or misrepresentations of the product.

This is the second time that the ministry has proposed new changes and requested public consultation on the “Regulations Governing the Labeling of Infant Formula and Follow-up Formula” policy. Prior to this announcement, he had proposed other related changes in September last year.

Other drafted changes include indicating on the product packaging the methods of use and storage of the product, dosage and warnings.

For example, for products that contain less than 1 mg of iron per 100 Kcal, the products must state the phrase “infants taking this product should take note of iron supplementation (嬰兒食用時,應注意補充鐵質)” , or phrases that convey the same meaning.

If the product contains more than 1 mg of iron per 100 Kcal, then it must indicate “iron-fortified infant formula (添加鐵質之嬰兒配方食品)”.

On the other hand, the products must specify to which categories they belong, such as “infant formula”, “complementary food for older infants”, as well as the intended consumers.

Public consultation is open for the next 60 days, starting August 17, and the draft policy is expected to be officially implemented on July 1, 2024.

Products produced before the date could continue to be sold in the market until the expiration date.
