Owner Susan Phillips’ passion for nutrition and vitamin therapy is something she learned from her father, the late Dr. Gerald Phillips. His father and mother, Chris, both grew up in Atascosa County.

Susan’s brother, Jeff, and sister-in-law, Karen Phillips, opened the store on the highway. 97 in Pleasanton in August 1998, where the Blockbuster Video had been located. The store was born because there was no place Dr. Phillips could send people to for proper food. Susan, who was in her 20s and in college when her father began to take a greater interest in nutrition, said she was fascinated by her father’s interest in treating patients naturally.

“I never understood how he could read an entire book on vitamin C. That’s when he got interested, so he started trying to treat patients naturally,” said Susan.

“That’s how The Good Store started and that’s what we’ve been doing ever since — trying to promote good healthy eating,” Phillips said. Susan bought the store from Jeff and Karen on January 1, 2011.

“We try to get as many as possible, so people don’t have to go to San Antonio. We are again the only health food store in Atascosa County. We have vitamins, minerals, homeopathic products, essential oils and more.

“Our mission is to provide good, pure nutritional products. Everything here is GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certified, which means it has passed inspections,” Phillips said. “All products are pure products, so there are no extra fillers, things like that. You know you are getting pure vitamins when you come here, instead of buying it from other outlets. sale where they use so many fillers. The quality here at The Good Health Store is the biggest difference.

Homeopathics are concentrated forms of other nutritional supplements, which usually pass under the tongue.

“We have different strengths among them. They work quickly to relieve symptoms and take care of different issues,” Phillips explained.

Susan is a big supporter of community and encourages others to shop locally.

She carries local produce such as Rakowitz Honey from Karen and Otto Rakowitz to Jourdanton, which is extremely popular with her customers. You can also find CDs featuring local artist Jarrett Akers in his shop. Phillips likes to support other local businesses rather than chain stores.

“If we support each other, we can survive.”

Among the latest additions to The Good Health Store are CBD products.

“I have a whole line. I have everything from oils to capsules to gummies and lotions, including pet products,” Phillips said.

CBD can help people with inflammation, nausea, hot flashes, muscle aches, anxiety, digestive issues, irritated skin and more. They make a CBD with added melatonin to help people sleep.

“It’s all within Texas legal limits. I also have Delta 8 which is still within legal limits but it is a hallucinogen so I wouldn’t recommend anyone take it unless they’re home and not driving,” said Phillips said. “It’s also very popular. It’s part of the CBD line and all my CBD comes from the US, so it’s all homegrown.

Along with CBD, collagen is also a popular product right now. For those who need help dealing with common allergies in South Texas, you’ll also find effective products here.

Phillips supports young people whenever she can, running adverts on football programs and contributing to fundraisers and more.

“Children and community are a top priority,” Phillips said.

She finds the greatest reward in helping others and seeing results.

“When they come in with a problem and then come back and tell me it helped, that’s the biggest reward. It’s seeing people appreciate that natural products can help solve their problems.
